CactusHairy-Spined Cereus Cactus
Cereus sp. (possibly Cereus hildmannianus or related columnar species)
$28
This striking multi-stemmed columnar cactus fans out boldly from a shared base, surrounded by a handpicked collection of smooth river stones and rough local rocks. The stems are deep blue-green with clearly defined ribs lined with clusters of fine, hair-like white radial spines that give the plant a soft, almost frosted appearance from a distance — though up close those spines mean business. Several stems reach outward at low angles, giving the whole arrangement a dramatic, sprawling character that feels more like a desert landscape than a potted plant. It has been lovingly dressed with a variety of stones that anchor the soil and complement the plant's wild geometry. Cereus cacti are among the most forgiving and rewarding columnar cacti you can grow. They thrive in bright, direct sunlight — a south-facing window or a sunny patio does the trick indoors, while outdoors they love full sun. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. A fast-draining cactus mix amended with perlite or coarse sand is ideal. They are cold-tolerant down to around 25–30°F when dry, making them surprisingly adaptable. Difficulty is low once established — benign neglect is often their preferred care plan. Easy to propagate. Up here in the Tunk Valley at 3,600 feet, this one has been grown under the watchful eye of Brian's off-grid greenhouse, soaking up the intense high-elevation light and riding out cool nights with ease. The river stones tucked into the bowl were gathered locally, making this arrangement a true piece of the homestead — rugged, unhurried, and quietly beautiful.
