San Pedro Cactus
Echinopsis pachanoi
$45
This San Pedro is a striking single column specimen, with smooth, deeply ribbed column — bright apple-green and almost glossy under light, with evenly spaced areoles bearing short, neat spines. The top photo reveals the crown in gorgeous detail: four to five plump, rounded ribs fanning out like a star, full of stored water and vitality. The columns are well-proportioned, upright, and clearly healthy, with that characteristic blue-green fade toward the base that San Pedro develops as it matures. It's a genuinely beautiful plant — architectural, alive, and full of personality. San Pedro is one of the more forgiving columnar cacti you can grow. It thrives in bright, direct light — a south-facing window or a grow light setup like Brian's works wonderfully — and appreciates a deep, infrequent soak during the growing season, with near-drought conditions in winter. Well-draining gritty cactus mix is essential; this one is potted in a mix that clearly suits it. It's fast-growing by cactus standards and surprisingly cold-tolerant, making it a great choice for growers who want a rewarding columnar without the fuss. Difficulty is low to moderate — it's genuinely hard to kill if you don't overwater. This beauty has been growing under Brian's care at the Iron Mountain Ranch homestead in the Tunk Valley at 3,600 feet, spending its days soaking up supplemental light through the long northern winters. It's ready to head somewhere with good windows and someone who'll appreciate watching it reach for the sky.
