San Pedro Cactus
Echinopsis pachanoi
$15
This young San Pedro stands as a single upright column of deep forest green, its ribbed body lined with evenly spaced areoles bearing clusters of short, soft-looking spines that catch the light with a warm pinkish-tan hue. The column tapers slightly toward its rounded growing tip, showing healthy new growth at the crown — a good sign that this little one is actively reaching upward. Nestled in a small nursery pot surrounded by hand-collected river stones from the Tunk Valley, it has a tidy, intentional presentation that belies how vigorous this species can become over time. San Pedro is one of the most rewarding columnar cacti you can grow. It thrives in bright, direct sun and appreciates a well-draining cactus mix amended with perlite or coarse grit. Water deeply but infrequently during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, back off almost entirely. It tolerates a surprising range of temperatures and is considered one of the easier columnar cacti for beginners — fast-growing by cactus standards, forgiving of occasional neglect, and ultimately capable of becoming a towering statement plant. This particular cutting was rooted and grown on Brian's off-grid homestead in the Tunk Valley at 3,600 feet — where the clean mountain air and careful hand-watering have given it a strong, healthy start. The river stones in the pot were gathered right here on the property. It's ready to put down roots in its next home and start its long, slow reach toward the sky.
