CactusSan Pedro Cactus
Echinopsis pachanoi (syn. Trichocereus pachanoi)
$15
This is a stout, deeply ribbed columnar cactus with rich dark green skin and clusters of amber-gold spines radiating from evenly spaced areoles. The plant is showing multiple ribs and is already branching or pushing a second column at its base, giving it a full, architectural presence even at this young size. The waxy, smooth surface has that classic San Pedro sheen, and the top is actively growing — a good sign of a healthy, vigorous specimen. It sits in a 4-inch pot with a top dressing of local stones, a signature touch from the Tunk Valley homestead. San Pedro is one of the more forgiving columnar cacti to grow. It thrives in full sun to bright indirect light and prefers a well-draining sandy or gritty mix — think 50% pumice or perlite blended with quality cactus soil. Water deeply but infrequently during the growing season, and taper off almost entirely in winter. It tolerates a surprising amount of cold for a cactus — down to the mid-20s°F with good drainage — making it more viable than most for high-elevation growers. Difficulty is easy to moderate, and it's a fast grower once established. Up here in the Tunk Valley at 3,600 feet, San Pedro does remarkably well as a container plant brought inside before the hard freezes hit. Brian keeps his collection in a bright, south-facing window through winter and moves them outdoors once nights settle above freezing — they respond enthusiastically to the high-altitude sun and dry air.
