CactusSan Pedro Cactus
Echinopsis pachanoi
$25
This San Pedro is a sturdy, multi-ribbed columnar cactus with deep green skin, widely spaced areoles bearing short amber spines, and that characteristic four-to-five-ribbed cross-section that makes it so unmistakable from above. The plant shown has developed a healthy cluster of columns — the tallest standing roughly 5–6 inches above the soil — with plump, turgid flesh indicating it is well-rooted and actively growing. The surface carries the natural weathering marks and faint white corking you'd expect from a young but established specimen, and it's nestled among river stones that help anchor it and moderate moisture at the base. San Pedro is one of the more forgiving columnar cacti you can grow. It thrives in full sun but tolerates bright indirect light indoors, making it adaptable for windowsill or patio growing. Water deeply but infrequently — once the soil is completely dry in summer, every 3–5 weeks in winter. Use a fast-draining cactus mix amended with extra perlite or coarse grit. It's rated hardy to about 15°F (-9°C) with good drainage, placing it in USDA zones 8–11 for outdoor culture, though it makes an excellent container plant brought inside for cold winters. Difficulty is moderate — mainly just patience, as this is a slow but rewarding grower. Up here at 3,600 feet in the Tunk Valley, Brian keeps San Pedro in containers that can be moved in before the hard frosts hit, and they reward that extra care by pushing new growth all through the warm months. There's something grounding about having one of these ancient, storied plants growing alongside the tomatoes and herbs — a reminder that the homestead holds space for beauty and history, not just harvest.
