Amethyst Crystal Cluster - Kingston Mtns, CA
Quartz (Amethyst)
$60
This is a truly spectacular amethyst crystal cluster from the Kingston Mountains of California — a rare and highly regarded US locality for natural amethyst. The dominant terminal crystal rises dramatically above a crown of secondary clear-to-lavender quartz points, giving the specimen an almost architectural, cathedral-like silhouette. The main point displays a striking color zoning pattern: deep, saturated royal purple concentrated at the core and tip, fading gracefully into translucent pale lavender and near-clear quartz toward the outer edges and base. The crystal faces show beautiful natural striations and internal fractured planes that scatter light into prismatic rainbow flashes, visible in close-up views. The surface texture transitions from glassy and smooth on the main tower to rough and jagged on the secondary points, adding wonderful tactile contrast. Kingston Mountains amethyst is a prized collectible from the Mojave Desert region of San Bernardino County, California. These crystals form in hydrothermal veins cutting through Precambrian and Mesozoic granite and metamorphic basement rock — geological relatives of the ancient terranes found throughout the Pacific Cordillera. The purple color in amethyst is caused by irradiation-induced defects associated with trace iron impurities within the silicon dioxide lattice. The deep color zoning and large, well-formed prismatic crystals typical of Kingston Mountains material reflect slow, undisturbed growth in mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids deep within the desert mountain range. This locality produces some of the finest North American amethyst, making each specimen a true regional treasure. This specimen comes from the Chase W. Barnett mineral collection with locality documentation intact — a mark of quality and provenance that serious collectors value highly. It is now part of Brian Eisenberg's curated collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley, WA, a testament to the far-reaching connections that great minerals inspire across the American West.
