This is a truly exceptional multi-generational quartz specimen — a dramatic cluster of large, deeply saturated amethyst and smoky quartz crystals rising from a shared matrix, surrounded at the base by a stunning spray of smaller clear to pale smoky quartz micro-crystals fanning outward in a radial burst. The primary crystals are substantial and well-formed, with pronounced hexagonal terminations, heavily striated prism faces, and rich internal color zoning that shifts from near-black smoky gray at the body to vivid violet-purple at the tips. Inclusions of dark mineral material — likely iron oxide or goethite — coat portions of the crystal faces and add striking depth and texture. The companion micro-crystal druzy spray is itself a showpiece, with dozens of razor-sharp terminated points erupting in a starburst formation alongside a small secondary amethyst crystal point. This piece is exceptional from every angle. The Kingston Mountains of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California are part of a geologically rich and remote region where hydrothermal quartz veins developed within Precambrian metamorphic and Mesozoic granitic basement rocks. Amethyst forms when silicon dioxide crystallizes in the presence of trace iron and is exposed to natural irradiation, while smoky quartz results from gamma radiation acting on aluminum impurities within the quartz lattice. The co-occurrence of both varieties on a single matrix is an indicator of complex thermal and chemical history — making specimens from this area prized by collectors. The Kingston Mountains are relatively uncommon on the collector market compared to Brazilian or Arizona amethyst localities, lending authentic regional rarity to this piece. This gorgeous specimen comes directly from the Chase W. Barnett mineral collection, curated by a passionate collector with a keen eye for natural form and locality provenance. It has found a new home in Brian Eisenberg's collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley, WA — a fitting companion to a collection built on reverence for the Earth's raw beauty and geological heritage.
