Amethyst Crystal Point – Kingston Mountains, CA
Quartz (Amethyst)
$25
This is a captivating natural amethyst crystal point collected from the rugged Kingston Mountains of California's Mojave Desert region. The specimen displays a striking combination of deep violet and pale lavender hues, with rich phantom zones of concentrated purple color visible deep within the crystal's interior — a hallmark of slow, episodic crystal growth. The termination is intact and well-defined, while the base shows natural matrix attachment points and minor associated clear quartz growth. The crystal body is semi-translucent to transparent in areas, allowing light to reveal beautiful internal color banding, fracture planes, and ghostly phantom layering that tells the story of its growth history. Small secondary crystal formations are visible along the edges, adding wonderful textural interest to this already characterful piece. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by iron impurities and natural irradiation within the host rock. The Kingston Mountains, part of the Mojave Desert's complex Basin and Range geology, are known for producing amethyst in hydrothermal vein systems cutting through ancient igneous and metamorphic basement rocks. The phantom formations within this crystal indicate multiple growth phases separated by periods of mineral deposition on the crystal faces — essentially a geological time capsule. The deep purple phantom core contrasted with lighter outer growth layers makes this specimen especially scientifically and aesthetically interesting. This specimen comes from the Chase W. Barnett mineral collection — a curated collection of field-collected specimens — and now finds a new home as part of Brian Eisenberg's traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch. A piece of the Mojave's geological heritage, beautifully preserved and ready to be admired.
