This handsome specimen presents as a chunky, sub-cubic cleavage mass of pale sage green fluorite — the kind of muted, glassy green that whispers of ancient hydrothermal fluids and deep earth chemistry. The fluorite portion displays characteristic vitreous luster with stepped cleavage surfaces catching the light beautifully, and a notably translucent lower face where the crystal depth is most visible, revealing the gem-like clarity hiding beneath the surface. A small dark mineral inclusion — likely tourmaline or hornblende — punctuates one face, adding character. The specimen sits on a buff-tan matrix host rock, giving it a natural, fresh-from-the-earth presentation that makes it excellent for both display and study. Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) is one of the most beloved minerals in any collection, forming in hydrothermal veins and often associated with lead, silver, and other metallic ore deposits. The Azuza area of the San Gabriel Valley in California has produced fluorite associated with limestone contact zones and skarn deposits in the San Gabriel Mountains — a geologically active corridor where igneous intrusions met older carbonate rocks. The pale green color is characteristic of trace amounts of rare earth elements or yttrium substituting in the crystal lattice. Fluorite is also famously fluorescent under UV light, a property that gives it its name and makes it a perennial crowd favorite. This specimen comes from Brian's traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley, WA — a thoughtfully curated addition to represent the broader world of mineralogy beyond the homestead's own rich geological bounty.
