Fluorite
$22
This is a striking little fluorite specimen from China, showcasing a beautifully complex cubic crystal structure with multiple growth faces and octahedral cleavage planes clearly visible across its surfaces. The coloring is spectacular — a deep, inky violet-purple core that darkens almost to black at its heart, surrounded by radiating zones of lighter purple and clear to translucent fluorite toward the outer crystal edges. Under backlit or angled light, the specimen comes alive with brilliant blue-purple luminescence that reveals the natural zoning within the crystal. The matrix coating adds textural contrast against the glassy crystal faces, and the piece has excellent visual weight for its compact size. Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) forms in hydrothermal veins, often alongside quartz, calcite, and sulfide minerals. China is one of the world's premier sources for fluorite, particularly known for producing specimens with dramatic color zoning and exceptional clarity. The deep purple coloration in fluorite is caused by exposure to natural radiation over geological time, which displaces electrons within the crystal lattice and creates color centers. Chinese fluorite, especially from provinces like Hunan and Fujian, is prized by collectors worldwide for its color depth and crystal perfection. Fluorite is also notable for giving its name to the phenomenon of fluorescence — many specimens glow brilliantly under UV light. This specimen is part of Brian's traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley, WA, representing the wider world of mineralogy that complements his locally sourced Okanogan Highlands finds. It's a compact but visually powerful little gem that punches well above its size class.
