Fluorite Crystal Cluster with Calcite Matrix
Fluorite
$33
This is a truly captivating miniature fluorite specimen housed in a collector's display case, showcasing a dramatic cubic crystal form with strikingly deep purple-to-near-black coloration at its core. The crystal reveals beautiful color zoning — a rich, almost ink-dark purple center transitions outward through violet and lavender to a clear, glassy outer rim, all following the natural cubic cleavage structure of fluorite. One face of the crystal shows an almost iridescent teal-blue and green flash when light catches it at certain angles, a stunning optical effect caused by internal light refraction within the crystal lattice. The base of the specimen is anchored in warm golden-tan calcite matrix, with secondary white crystalline material adding textural contrast. The specimen is small but remarkably dimensional and detailed — a true miniature gem-quality display piece. Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) forms in hydrothermal veins, often alongside calcite, quartz, and sulfide minerals. The deep purple coloration is caused by natural irradiation affecting the crystal's color centers, while the dramatic zoning reflects changes in the chemical environment during crystal growth — each band a chapter in the mineral's long formation story. Chinese fluorite localities, particularly in Fujian and Hunan provinces, are world-renowned for producing specimens with exceptional color depth, transparent faces, and complex zoning patterns like those seen here. The golden calcite matrix is a classic pairing from these deposits, adding warmth and contrast to the dark crystal faces. This specimen comes with its original C.W.B. Minerals label identifying it as a China fluorite, adding collector provenance to its appeal. It is part of Brian Eisenberg's curated traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley — a handpicked addition alongside the remarkable native minerals of the Okanogan Highlands.
