This gorgeous little fluorite specimen from Bingham, New Mexico displays a dreamy blue-violet to lavender hue that seems to shift in quality and depth depending on the light. The crystal exhibits classic cubic cleavage faces — smooth, glassy, and semi-translucent — with a soft frosted quality on some surfaces that gives it an almost ethereal glow. Nestled into the top of the specimen is a cluster of tan to buff-colored matrix material, likely calcite or feldspar-rich host rock, along with secondary micro-crystalline fluorite growth that adds wonderful textural contrast to the polished-looking primary crystal body. The piece is compact and chunky, fitting neatly in the palm of the hand with satisfying heft for its size. Bingham, New Mexico is located in the Socorro County area and is known for producing fluorite specimens of exceptional clarity and color, often found in association with limestone-hosted hydrothermal veins. Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) forms when fluorine-rich hydrothermal fluids percolate through host rock and precipitate in fractures and cavities. The blue-violet coloration in fluorite is often attributed to natural irradiation and the presence of rare earth element impurities or lattice defects. New Mexico fluorite has a long and storied collecting history and specimens from Bingham are prized for exactly this kind of soft periwinkle-blue toning. This specimen is part of Brian Eisenberg's curated traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley — a wonderful complement to his native Washington minerals, bringing the mineral wealth of the American Southwest right to the high desert homestead at 3,600 feet.
