Goethite Botryoidal — Graves Mountain, GA
Goethite
$55
This is a breathtaking specimen of botryoidal goethite from the legendary Graves Mountain locality in Georgia — a site so celebrated among mineral collectors that specimens from it are considered benchmark examples of the species. The surface of this piece is an absolute feast for the eyes: dense, tightly packed grape-like globules of iron oxyhydroxide cascade across the matrix in a rich, lumpy texture, ranging from tiny micro-botryoids to larger rounded masses. What makes this piece truly spectacular is its iridescent tarnish patina — a peacock-like shimmer of deep metallic green, violet-purple, and warm bronze playing across the black surface. Close-up photography reveals just how alive this specimen looks, almost like a cluster of black pearls dipped in oil, catching light in constantly shifting ways. Small orange-red iron oxide accents punctuate the surface in places, adding earthy warmth against the otherwise dark metallic tones. Goethite (FeO·OH) is an iron-bearing hydroxide mineral that typically forms as a weathering product of iron-rich minerals. Botryoidal goethite — named for its grape-cluster habit — forms when iron-rich solutions precipitate slowly in void spaces, building up rounded concentric layers over time. Graves Mountain in Lincoln County, Georgia, is world-famous for producing exceptional specimens of rutile, lazulite, and goethite, with the iridescent goethite in particular being highly prized for its dramatic metallic surface sheen — caused by thin-film interference on the iron oxide patina, similar to an oil slick effect. Specimens from this locality are increasingly hard to obtain as the site is now largely closed to collecting. This specimen comes from Brian's traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch — a testament to his commitment to curating not just local Tunk Valley treasures, but exceptional mineral representatives from celebrated localities worldwide. It's a true collector's piece that deserves a prominent spot in any serious mineral display.
