Hematite (Iron Oxide)
$85
This is a stunning specimen of specular hematite — the showiest, most light-catching variety of one of Earth's most ancient iron minerals. The surface blazes with an intense metallic mirror luster, with interlocking platy crystals that catch and scatter light like hammered steel. Under close examination, the macro photos reveal intricate herringbone and chevron patterns formed by tightly packed micaceous hematite plates layered in repeating geometric arrangements — a natural mosaic of crystalline iron oxide. The reverse side shows contrasting matte black surfaces with silky striations and a warm golden-ochre matrix clinging to the edges, likely a limonite or goethite host material, which beautifully frames the specimen's dramatic dark metallic face. Specular hematite — sometimes called 'specularite' — forms when iron-rich hydrothermal fluids move through metamorphic or sedimentary rock, depositing hematite in thin, reflective plates aligned along cleavage planes. Idaho hosts significant iron-rich metamorphic terranes, particularly in the Bitterroot and Cabinet Mountain regions, where tectonic forces and deep crustal heating have produced exceptional hematite specimens. Hematite is one of the primary ores of iron and has been used by humans for tens of thousands of years as pigment, in ceremonial use, and in metallurgy. The red streak it leaves — despite its metallic silver surface — is its most famous field identifier. This specimen comes from the personal collection of Chase W. Barnett and was collected in Idaho, making it a treasured trade piece in Brian's curated collection at Iron Mountain Ranch. Its dramatic mirror-bright surfaces and complex crystal patterning make it a genuine display-worthy addition to any serious mineral collection.
