Quartz (Rutilated)
$55
This is a breathtaking rutilated quartz crystal cluster displaying some of the most dramatic golden rutile inclusions you're likely to encounter in a specimen of this size. The main crystal body is a translucent smoky champagne tone, and woven through it like threads of spun gold are dense fans and sprays of deep amber-to-golden rutile needles. The rutile appears in multiple orientations — tight parallel bundles, radiating fan formations, and scattered individual needles — creating an almost painterly effect frozen inside the quartz. A secondary crystal and smaller satellite point add to the complexity of this multi-terminated cluster, and dark metalite or hematite masses at the rutile termination points anchor the gold with a striking contrast. The facets catch light brilliantly, especially along the prism faces where the rutile bundles run parallel and create iridescent shimmer. Rutilated quartz forms when titanium dioxide (TiO2) crystallizes as rutile needles during the same hydrothermal growth event that produced the quartz host. Brazil is the world's premier source for this combination, particularly the state of Minas Gerais, where pegmatitic conditions allow both minerals to grow together with exceptional clarity and needle density. The golden color of the rutile is a result of iron impurities within the titanium dioxide lattice. This specimen also appears to contain minor black inclusions — possibly tourmaline or ilmenite — which are common companions in Brazilian rutilated quartz and add further mineralogical richness to the piece. This specimen comes from Brazil via the C.W.B. Minerals collection and has been carefully preserved in its display box. It is a true collector's piece — the kind of stone that draws you closer the longer you look at it, revealing new detail with every shift in light.
