Smokey Quartz w/ Aegirine DT — Malawi
Quartz with Aegirine inclusions
$28
This is a stunning double-terminated (DT) smoky quartz crystal from Malawi, showcasing exceptional clarity with a warm, smoky brown translucence that deepens toward the center of the point. Both terminations are well-formed and intact, giving this specimen a natural symmetry that is rarely seen in quartz crystals of this quality. What truly sets this piece apart are the dramatic dark aegirine needle inclusions visible throughout the interior — slender, jet-black crystals suspended in time within the translucent quartz matrix, creating a breathtaking window into the geology of another world. The crystal faces are vitreous and glassy, with natural growth striations and internal fracture planes that catch the light and scatter it in a dazzling display. Aegirine is a sodium iron pyroxene mineral that grows in alkaline igneous and metamorphic environments, and its association with smoky quartz is particularly prized among collectors. Malawi is renowned for producing some of the world's finest aegirine-included quartz specimens, where pegmatitic intrusions in the ancient Precambrian basement rocks create the perfect chemical environment for these two minerals to crystallize together. The double termination indicates this crystal grew freely in a void or cavity, allowing both ends to develop natural points without attachment to matrix — a relatively rare and highly collectible formation type. This specimen is part of Brian's curated traded collection at Iron Mountain Ranch in the Tunk Valley, WA — a testament to his eye for exceptional mineral specimens from around the world. While it traveled far from the highlands of Malawi, it has found a worthy home alongside the wild beauty of the Okanogan Highlands.
