This striking cluster features multiple deeply saturated smoky quartz crystals rising from a matrix host, their color ranging from near-opaque charcoal to dark pewter grey with classic hexagonal prismatic form. The terminations, though partially contacted, show well-defined faces and the characteristic striated surfaces of natural quartz growth. Nestled at the base and between the crystal points are creamy yellow-white topaz crystals — rough and slightly lustrous — adding a warm contrast to the dark, brooding quartz. The matrix host is a pale feldspar-rich matrix that cradles the entire assembly beautifully, making this an excellent multi-mineral display piece. Smoky quartz gets its dark coloration from natural irradiation affecting aluminum impurities within the silicon dioxide crystal lattice — a process that occurs over geologic timescales in granite and pegmatite environments. Idaho is well known for its remarkable pegmatite deposits that yield both smoky quartz and topaz together, as topaz forms in fluorine-rich hydrothermal and pneumatolytic environments commonly associated with granitic intrusions. This association of smoky quartz and topaz in a single specimen is a hallmark of Idaho's gem-producing pegmatite pockets and makes this piece especially collectible. This specimen comes from the Chase W. Barnett mineral collection and carries with it the careful curation and regional provenance that makes collector-sourced pieces so special. It is a wonderful addition to any mineral collection, bridging the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest's granitic geology with the gemstone richness of Idaho's celebrated pegmatite fields.
