Topaz Crystal — Colorado
Topaz
$85
This is a substantial raw topaz crystal fragment showcasing the hallmark characteristics of Colorado topaz — a semi-transparent to translucent body ranging from near-colorless to soft pale yellow-green, with warm honey-amber iron oxide staining along the base and natural cleavage surfaces. The crystal displays beautiful prismatic striations running vertically along the faces, a telltale signature of topaz's orthorhombic crystal system. Multiple natural cleavage planes are visible, catching light with a glassy, almost greasy vitreous luster. Phantom-like internal features and subtle inclusions add depth and character to what is already a visually compelling rough specimen. The piece has good heft for its size, consistent with topaz's notably high specific gravity. Topaz is an aluminum silicate fluoride hydroxide mineral that crystallizes in pegmatite veins and high-temperature hydrothermal environments. Colorado is famous for its topaz occurrences, particularly from the Thomas Range-style environments and the pegmatites of the Front Range region, where crystals form in gas cavities within rhyolite and granite. The natural pale yellow coloring and vertical striations seen on this piece are consistent with classic Colorado-locality topaz. With a Mohs hardness of 8, topaz is one of the harder minerals in any collection and is a gemstone of genuine value even in its raw natural form. This specimen comes directly from the Chase W. Barnett mineral collection, making it a piece with documented collector provenance. It's a wonderful addition to any serious mineral collection — raw, honest, and strikingly beautiful in its uncut natural state.
